RSS Car Rig360° Plates for VP & VFX

Virtual production with LED walls offers a great solution for shooting car scenes, especially because it captures reflections on the car’s surfaces and windows from almost every angle. While shooting before chroma (green or blue screen) can be technically challenging, shooting real cars can even be a more productional inconvenience and challenge, requiring the camera to be mounted in or to the car and requiring frequent stops and resets, dealing with permit issues and having no control over weather conditions. Let alone deficient communication to cast and crew from one vehicle to another.

Virtual production allows for more flexibility and cost savings, battling the cons mentioned above. Traditional methods (including adding backgrounds in post/VFX) can also quickly add up in costs as they are charged per shot.

Good stabilised plate-footage of the road, specifically car plates that can be used for a variety of angles, is hard to come by. Traditional car plates are typically a fixed angle, limiting their usefulness on set when shooting the car from multiple angles. Existing libraries are not always up to date in terms of resolution and requirements and can be expensive when multiple shots are needed.

To address this challenge, our team developed its own camera rig with seven cameras: six in every direction and one pointed to the sky (for top-down reflections).

We rigorously tested cameras and selected the Panasonic BS1H (Netflix approved), which provides 14 stops of dynamic range and excellent low-light capabilities, enabling us to capture and render an image with as much information as possible during the day or night and to keep the image flexible in terms of color workflow.

This results in a total output resolution of up to 16K, which is a requirement considering the fact you will always be filming a smaller part of the whole plate and still have the resolution match your LED wall and camera framing.

Another area we thoroughly tested and developed  is stabilisation of the rig for getting clean output without bumps and vibrations. We’ve come up with a solution to get exceptionally stable plates with our own proprietary gyro solvers.

Synchronization between cameras is crucial for efficient stitching and to prevent half frames or other artifacts. Our rig was designed with synchronization in mind, utilizing techniques commonly used in virtual production sets.
